Tree Trimming and Pruning in Brentwood, CA

Trimming keeps a tree healthy, safe and out of your roof and lines. Here's what each type of cut is for, how often it's needed, and what to ask before a crew starts cutting.

Types of trimming

Crown thinning

Selectively removing branches inside the crown to let in light and air and reduce wind load. Done lightly and evenly, it keeps the tree's natural shape.

Crown raising

Removing lower branches for clearance over a sidewalk, driveway, fence or roofline.

Deadwooding

Removing dead and broken limbs, which are the ones most likely to fall.

Structural pruning

Shaping younger trees so branches attach well and the tree grows a strong structure over time.

Hedges and shrubs

Hedge trimming is a different job from tree work; confirm what's included if your quote covers both.

Be wary of topping. Cutting the main branches back to stubs is widely discouraged because the tree reacts with fast, weakly attached regrowth. A good company can explain why each cut is being made.

How often should trees be trimmed?

There is no single schedule. Young trees benefit from structural pruning in their first years, mature trees often need a check every few years, and fast growers or trees near structures may need more. Look for limbs over the roof, rubbing branches, dead wood, and growth near lines.

Timing

Pruning is generally best in the dormant season (UC IPM). If birds are nesting, work is better scheduled outside that period; CDFW recommends avoiding February through August where possible and surveying for active nests if work cannot wait (CDFW). Read the timing guide →

Limbs near power lines

Never trim near a line yourself. PG&E says it is unlawful to work within 10 feet of a distribution or transmission line without contacting the utility first (PG&E).

What it costs

HomeGuide lists trimming at $400 to $900 per tree (HomeGuide). Final prices depend on tree size, how much is removed and access. See the full cost guide →

Questions to ask

  • Which branches are coming off, and why?
  • How much of the crown will be removed?
  • Is cleanup and hauling included?
  • Who checks for nesting birds if it's between February and August?
  • What is the company's license number and proof of insurance?

Tree trimming questions

How much does tree trimming cost?

HomeGuide lists tree trimming at $400 to $900 per tree as an alternative to removal. Angi and others vary by tree size and hours of work. Treat these as national references; the company prices your trees after seeing them.

When is the best time to trim trees?

UC IPM says pruning is best done in the dormant season. Nesting season (February through August for many birds, per CDFW) is a reason to schedule around active nests. Our timing guide covers both.

What is tree topping and should I let a company do it?

Topping means cutting the main branches back to stubs. It is widely discouraged because it leaves wounds and fast, weakly attached regrowth. If a company proposes topping a healthy tree, ask for the reason and consider a second quote.

Can I trim branches near power lines myself?

No. PG&E says it is unlawful to work within 10 feet of a distribution or transmission line without contacting the utility first, and it asks customers to call (800) 564-5080 for a safety evaluation before tree work near lines.
